One of the largest squares in Prague is going to undergo a transformation. The Prague Institute for Planning and Development (IPR Prague) announced a city architectural competition for the transformation of Victory square. The aim of the competition is to make the square a more welcoming place the residents of Prague 6.

Architects can now enter the competition to transform Victory Square. The jury will be filled by representatives of the city, representatives of the borough of Prague 6 and leading Czech and foreign architects. The proposed two-round competition will enable a wide range of experts to participate. The submission of proposals is planned for June 2018.

“Victory Square is another important square in Prague that we are preparing to improve. Currently leading global teams are preparing to alter the park in Charles square and the conversation of Lesser Town Square are already ongoing. I trust that the competition will uncover proposals that help to resolve the square’s pressing problems,” said Prague Mayor Adriana Krnáčová.

The main problems that Victory square is to include the large amount of traffic, which became worse in recent years, in particular because of the opening of the Blanka tunnel. In addition, the actual layout of the square does not create a pleasant environment for residents of Prague 6. The hard to understand interchange means there is a constant risk of contact between cars and people. The planning competition should find the best possible solution for the square and eliminate these problems.

“Sitting down under the trees or easily transferring to a tram, metro or bus. Prague residents should basically feel good on Victory Square. Experience from Western Europe shows that it is possible to combine intensive transport with a high-quality public space and squares where pedestrians have the priority,” said Deputy Mayor Petra Kolínská.

“Victory square is undoubtedly a key public space in Prague 6 that deserves a transformation so that it serves all its users well,” said Prague IPR Director Ondřej Boháč.

The architectural and planning competition will have two rounds and the investor in subsequent realisation will be Prague City Hall. The prizes and reimbursement of costs in the competition are set at CZK 3,280,000.
